Each Renegade mod is a package containing modified maps for Renegade.  Many mods contain just one new map whereas others contain many maps.

Mod Installation

Generally speaking most Renegade mods can be installed by placing the ".pkg" file (contained in the mod's zip file) into the "data" folder (which is in the folder where Renegade is installed.

So in most cases (under a default Renegade install) simply unzip the contents of the zip fie to c:\westwood\Renegade\data .

How to Play a Mod

When joining multiplayer servers using mods the mod files simply need to be installed on the client.  It is then possible to join the game in the same way provided that the mods are identical (same version etc).

It is also possible to play a mod on a single computer by hosting a LAN server with the max players set to 1, note that Renegade version 1030 is required (the latest updates for renegade can be downloaded from the Westwood FTP site).

How to Start a 1 Player Multiplayer Game

1. Load Renegade and select "Multiplay Lan" from the main menu.
2. Click the  "Host Game" button (see below if you have a  "No LAN Ips" error).
3. Under "Basic" set "# of Players" to 1.
4. Go to the "Map Cycle" section and select your "Mod Package"
5. A list of available maps for the mod will then be displayed.  Add the map(s) you want to play and click "Start Game".

No LAN Ips Error

You may not be able to access the "Multiplay LAN" area.  If so this is because there is either no IP network adaptor in your machine or the network cable is unplugged (Windows 2000 and XP).

To get around this problem (without plugging in the network cable that is!) it is possible to add a loopback network adaptor (a software emulated network adaptor) using "Add New Hardware" in the Control Panel.  The exact method varies between Windows versions but generally speaking you need to select your device from a list (don't let Windows look for it!), then select "Network Adaptors" and "Microsoft Loopback Adaptor".

Any advice given here is as is.  It is not recommended that you change your computer's network settings.  You do so at your own risk.
